Giuseppe Verdi's epic, bleak, and complicated four-act Italian opera has been performed many times, and by many of opera's greats. This standout version has Riccardo Chailly conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and features excellent performances by Robert Lloyd, Rolando Villazon, Amanda Roocroft, and Dwayne Croft. The impressive, stylized sets help to convey DON CARLO's themes of oppression and lend a claustrophobic, modern feel to the proceedings, while Willy Decker's energetic direction keeps the long performance from dragging.
